Lyrics
Soon even remote places in Florida will be gone forever,
replaced by golf courses and country clubs. Music takes me back to those places.
It takes me back to the past where I can live, breathe and remain sane.
That's probably my biggest influence.
Either that or we just make up stuff that we think sounds cool.
SONGS FROM "ORANGE BLOSSOMS"
Orange Blossoms
well I snuck to her window to leave her a note
will you come meet me at the back of the grove?
all the trees were in bloom that sweet smell in the air
we were trebling together we were young we were scared
true love is hard to find
I can smell those orange blossoms
I can see her standing here
when I smell those orange blossoms then I'm there
we swam in the lake we watched fire flies by night
she was my princess and I was her Knight
but her daddy didn't like me He ain't like how I look
he said leave that boy be and that’s all that it took
true love is hard to find
I can smell those orange blossoms
I can see her standing here
when I smell those orange blossoms
then I'm there
but I remember her vow How she wouldn't forget me
and all these years later I can't even remember her name
true love is hard to find
I can smell those orange blossoms
I can see her standing here
when I smell those orange blossoms
then I'm there
where did she go
The Devil You Know
well don’t try to change the subject again
hide and seek with yourself it ain’t a game you can win
if ya gonna be dumb boy you got to be tough
if we changed up places you’d roll like a dime
yeah you hurt yeah you hurt yeah you know it ain’t right
I ain’t going I ain’t going to front you this time… because you…
you turned on me for the Devil you know
you turned on me for the Devil you know
well you can’t get free without some blood sweat and tears
that voice in your head has got you all balled up in fear
time to, to pack your bags and tell yourself goodbye
habit got you changed mind body and soul
and you’ll never feel free until you learn to let go of that
That bag full of bricks you been dragging around
you turned on me for the Devil you know
you turned on me for the Devil you know
Everything Good Is Bad
seems like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
seems Like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
your love is like the sweet forbidden fruit in life
i’m another woman’s man you’re another man’s wife
we both know the difference between right and wrong
life is full of temptation it’s hard to be strong
seems Like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
seems Like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
when I kissed your lips I made a big mistake
your love is like a habit a habit I can’t break
in my heart I lied cuz in my mind I know
with you I want to be with her I still belong
seems Like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
seems Like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
all the things you want to be maybe wrong to society
if there’s a choice between silk and satin they both feel good to me
seems Like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
seems Like everything good is bad
and everything bad is good
She Don't Know
she believes in what I tell her she believes in what I do
many times I’ve spoke to hear my own voice
somehow she still believes
lord but she don’t know how much I love her
and she don’t know how much I need
if the morning finds her gone I don’t know that I could carry on
she don’t know
she believes in what I do she believes even if I don’t
lord but she don’t know how much I love her
and she don’t know how much I need
if the morning finds her gone I don’t know that I could carry on
she don’t know
The Truth
darling wait for me I’m coming home
keep those home fires burning bright
don’t leave me alone
night becomes day
i’ll find my way
the golden moment has arrived
the bluest of blue skies
all I see when I open my eyes
heartache all that misery
can’t hold back the light of my life
night becomes day
i’ll find my way
the golden moment has arrived
one step closer to the truth – to the truth
one step closer to the truth – to the truth
one step closer to the truth – to the truth
one step closer to the truth – to the truth
no words can say No words won’t mean a thing
no answers tell what you mean what you mean to me
WYLF
magnetism chemistry feel the electricity
coming off of you
there’s no need to try to hide that come hither in your eyes
I know you want it too
this is what you’re looking for
I seen it on the break
this is what you’re looking for
your fingers set a fire in my skin a deep desire
oh so naturally
don’t play shy or act afraid I fell in this trap you laid
oh so willingly
I feel it on the fly smooth as move with a velvet glide
do you want to really know the answers to
so many hard questions that you’re asking
baby how could I prove that I’m right
this is what you’re looking for
I seen it on the break
this is what you’re looking for
I know baby I know it and you know it
this is what you’re looking for
On Fire
well she’s on the dance floor at your local jook
trying to sweat a bunch of fools she done already took
but when that gal gets down you can’t help but stare
cause that frames lit and smoking like a signal flare
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
we tried to look away we all tried to be cool
but she had an ass as thick as an army mule’s
she asked out for a drink just a batting those eyes
we all was reaching for our wallets man she’s a light
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
with a smooth proposition she’s got you in hand
I hear you say you don’t care boy are you a man?
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
she’s on fire
Move It On
come on baby come on yeah
come on whisper in my ear
if you ain’t going to make your intentions sugar
make ‘em crystal clear
cause every second is another golden opportunity
slipping on by
another chance Lord another chance baby
for me to make it make it alright
so we
move it on over move it on
move it o over to the high side
move it on over move it on
move it on over to the high side
it’s a sticky situation Lord yes
when you don’t give a damn
and if you ain’t been taught some manners boy
then she’s bound to smack your hand
so you got to
move it on over move it on
move it on over to the high side
move it on over move it on
move it on over to the high side
it’s a hard nose world that we live in
and we know life is full of pain
it’s a hard nose world that we live in
and its only love between us woman
keep us both from going insane
move it on over move it on
move it on over to the high side
move it on over move it on
move it on over to the high side
move it on over move it on
move it on over to the high side
move it on over move it on
move it on over to the high side
Higher You Climb
sook operator since the day you was born
flash a little money from some rock you sold
well they say the higher you climb further you fall
then you’d leave your young’ns with nothing at all
spend the grocery money trying to make you a name
while your kids can’t read or write I guess you ain’t going change
and now you say they got you pimping for the DEA
rolling on your boys cause you say you getting paid
the higher you climb the further you fall
the higher you climb the further you fall
the higher you climb the further you fall
the higher you climb the further you fall
the higher you climb the further you fall
the higher you climb the further you fall
the higher you climb the further you fall
the higher you climb the further you fall
Dew Drops
mama don’t you know how much I miss you
but I am stronger, stronger now
all these children cold faces Lord they followed me some how
I got to get away right now
mama ain’t a day goes by I don’t think about him
well I can see his face still
dull grey eyes burnt out to ash Lord to hell and gone again
I got to get away from him
i’m walking on moonlight
walking in the starlight place in my mind
walking on moonlight in the day
sipping on dew drops
float above the green treetops and it all
walking on moonlight in the day
i’m walking on moonlight
walking in the starlight place in my mind
walking on moonlight in the day
sipping on dew drops
float above the green treetops and it all
walking on moonlight in the day
Ybor City
the night is cold here on this ground
I hear that dog a howling makes me want to smile - cause
I know a rowdy place where
the whiskeys warm and women are too
when I get to Ybor City
all them women going to love me through and through
the tensions mounting boy them bullets fly
roll over on my back and stare into the sky
them stars look cold and lonesome
but I know where the ladies are sweet as wine
when I get to Ybor City
all the women going to love me out my mind
give me a minute boys
I ain’t dead yet
it’s just I’m tired of fighting
let me catch my breath - cause
I know a place that smells of
cigars and sweet, sweet perfume
when I get to Ybor City
all them women going to treat me like a king
when I get to Ybor City
all them women going to treat me like a king
all you women going to treat me like a king
all you women going to treat me like a king
fighting for my life said around midnight
all you women going to treat me like a king
all you women going to treat me like a king
I Believe (In Everything)
I believe in everything
from a river running backwards
to a bee when it stings
and I believe
in the voices out here
telling me to hold on
but let go of my fear
a childhood imagination
has been my salvation
one cloud at a time
lord I’m dreaming
let me look upon her
one more time
this beauty that I love – she’s why
I believe in everything, in everything I’m a believer
I believe in what I can’t change
in a hard lesson learned
and the strength from my pain
and I believe
in what I can’t prove
in the joy of not knowing
and the misunderstood
let go of my past
let go of my future
one cloud at a time
yes I’m dreaming
let me look upon her
one more time
this beauty that I love
before she’s gone, before she’s gone
I believe in everything, in everything I’m a believer
I believe in everything, in everything I’m a believer
the memory of one moment
is the beginning and the end of who I am
I believe in everything, in everything I’m a believer
I believe in everything, in everything I’m a believer
I believe in everything, in everything I’m a believer
I believe in everything, in everything I’m a believer
tell me about something tell me about something you believe in
tell me about something tell me about something you believe in
tell me about something tell me about something you believe in
SONGS FROM "COUNTRY GHETTO"
War
There's a war going on ⁄
And the ones about to die are safe at home ⁄
There's a war going on ⁄
And your world stops feeling now ⁄
⁄
No it ain't about the same ⁄
I know your mama and your daddy didn't tell you a thing ⁄
About the price of fame ⁄
And your world she's so deep Lord she's deep in shame ⁄
⁄
Ain't but one thing that's for sure ⁄
Everybody want some more ⁄
No one gonna do what's "right" ⁄
All we'll do is fight ⁄
⁄
There's a war going on ⁄
And the ones about to die are safe at home ⁄
There's a war going on ⁄
And the world stops feeling now ⁄
⁄
Way down deep in your soul ⁄
In that dark place you don't want to talk about ⁄
Why did you break the mold? ⁄
And your world she's so deep Lord she's deep in doubt ⁄
⁄
Ain't but one thing that's for sure ⁄
Everybody want some more ⁄
No one gonna do what's "right" ⁄
All we do is fight

Some say that I wronged you but I don't know how ⁄
If I could make it right you know I would, you know I would ⁄
⁄
So please forgive me for what some other man did too you ⁄
Before I came along ⁄
Cuz I don't want to go on fighting and fussing over something ⁄
I can't change at all ⁄
⁄
There's no way I can change the past or your pain ⁄
I don't want to fight walking in circles ⁄
I'm not the one who hurt you so deep down ⁄
Let's start a new now walking in circles ⁄
⁄
If time heals all wounds then change comes slow - so slow ⁄
But if I see a smile on your face the sun may yet Lord shine on us ⁄
⁄
There's no way I can change the past or your pain ⁄
I don't want to fight walking in circles ⁄
I'm not the one who hurt you so deep down ⁄
Let's start a new now walking in circles ⁄

Country Ghetto
I see the look in your eyes I know I'm simple and plain ⁄
A country boy can't survive too many ways in your game ⁄
So you can say what you will about your helping hand ⁄
I know I'll never be more than just your dumb white trash ⁄
⁄
Life in a country ghetto ⁄
⁄
Love touches us all yes we're black and we're white ⁄
Out here in the cut still living side by side ⁄
So never mind what you've seen and just forget what you've heard ⁄
Another ignorant redneck just some Hollywood words ⁄
⁄
Life in a country ghetto ⁄
⁄
No I'm not tame ⁄
The only voice that speaks for me speaks from this clay ⁄
Little boy you ain't never take a dime from the man ⁄
Starve to death before you live by a government handout ⁄
They call us poverty ⁄
⁄
Life in a country ghetto

Tragic
For his pleasure he sits sweating ⁄
The ghost of a man who now haunts himself ⁄
Hear the steady tick of time like a levee ⁄
Holding in his troubled mind ⁄
He was proud he was strong ⁄
Now he's counting back the days to what went wrong ⁄
A pipe a dream a fearful scream ⁄
All these FBI agents hiding in your pine trees ⁄
⁄
Lord it is tragic ⁄
⁄
Burning faster than a fuse lit from both ends ⁄
He spirals down ⁄
At the ready with a list of excuses ⁄
Most of his friends they don't know him now ⁄
The family's tired and confused ⁄
He's still trying to make an offer they can't refuse ⁄
Is he clean is he free ⁄
Are those FBI agents still hiding in his pine trees? ⁄
⁄
Lord it is tragic

By My Side
There, there's a time ⁄
and a place for everything ⁄
Hear these fools tell you who you are ⁄
but you don't hear a doggone thing ⁄
And maybe that's why, why I love you ⁄
Maybe that's how I feel your pain ⁄
Cuz we're both falling down ⁄
and there ain't nobody to blame ⁄
⁄
I ain't going nowhere ⁄
I ain't gonna hide ⁄
I ain't going nowhere ⁄
with you by my side ⁄
⁄
There, there's a road ⁄
that we walk but cannot see ⁄
Feel its spirit come and go ⁄
make me whole shape me out of clay ⁄
Now you know just how feeble ⁄
and how weak a man can be ⁄
And still you're pleased, ⁄
pleased to be with me anyway ⁄
⁄
I ain't going nowhere ⁄
I ain't gonna hide ⁄
I ain't going nowhere ⁄
with you by my side

On Palastine
That stormy morning ⁄
felt like a dream ⁄
he told me then ⁄
of what he'd seen ⁄
⁄
A child a man ⁄
in times gone bad ⁄
faces of stone ⁄
lined hard and sad ⁄
⁄
One Sunday day ⁄
they all came home ⁄
all that they had ⁄
was burned and gone ⁄
⁄
The timber men ⁄
their pistols gleamed ⁄
a lifetime lost ⁄
on Palastine ⁄
⁄
He made a stand ⁄
he would not run ⁄
he dropped the hoe ⁄
and picked up the gun ⁄
⁄
And then one night ⁄
he disappeared ⁄
it fed the worst ⁄
of all their fears ⁄
⁄
They found him quiet ⁄
high in a tree ⁄
he flew away ⁄
from Palastine ⁄
⁄
Then came the day ⁄
they moved away ⁄
more gunmen came ⁄
they could not stay ⁄
⁄
To Glen St. Mary ⁄
to Olustee ⁄
but we still dream ⁄
of Palastine

Footsteps
Don't you ⁄
Don't you hear ⁄
Footsteps a coming?
Turpentine
Deep in the piney woods ⁄
Breathe it til your head ache ⁄
Working for six dimes ⁄
breathe it til the ground shake ⁄
⁄
Lord and that fever's high ⁄
Hard luck life ⁄
Hurry boy ⁄
The sun is going down ⁄
⁄
Deep in the piney woods ⁄
Hell in its own place ⁄

flowing from a cat face ⁄

A Woman
In the morning she'll show you how much she loves you ⁄
And when the night comes you need to show her too ⁄
You got to touch her in that way don't you ever stop loving her ⁄
And that's how a woman wants to be loved by her man ⁄
⁄
Now any old fool can stay through the good times ⁄
And any old fool can run out on her ⁄
So you got to buckle up and face that stormy weather together ⁄
And that's how a woman wants to be loved by her man ⁄
⁄
There's a place Lord there's a place where a man can't go ⁄
She said, "you better not put your hands on me ⁄
unless you, unless you're ready to love me" ⁄
And that's how a woman wants to be loved by her man ⁄
And that's how a woman got to be loved by her man

Well I dearly love my home but ⁄

The Sun Is Shining Down
How many more days can you hold out ⁄
How much longer can you wait she asked ⁄
There was a time I thought I, I could answer ⁄
But my tongue gets tied as my thoughts drift away ⁄
⁄
Glory, Glory - Hallelujah ⁄
The sun is shining, shining down ⁄
Glory, Glory - Hallelujah ⁄
I'm alive and I'm feeling, feeling fine ⁄

All those simple thoughts all those peaceful dreams ⁄
Share the space with a hard worked, hard worked day ⁄
But it's the little things, the little things not expectation ⁄
That make life worth living, worth living ⁄

SONGS FROM "LOCHLOOSA"
That Boy
Everybody's looking ⁄
You're the talk all over town ⁄
When y'all walk the street ⁄
He's got a smile you got a frown ⁄
Too many folks talking about what you ought to do ⁄
And not what you gonna do ⁄
Still ain't right for that man to get on top of you ⁄
⁄
That Boy don't love - He's afraid of you ⁄
⁄
We heard he slapped you around ⁄
And I know that shit ain't right ⁄
One minute y'all get along ⁄
And then the next you fuss and fight ⁄
Sugar wouldn't melt in his mouth according to you ⁄
Next day we see you girl you all black and blue ⁄
⁄
That Boy don't love - He's afraid of you ⁄
⁄
Now your moments come ⁄
You've got to break out on your own ⁄
Girl you can't live in fear ⁄
Inside that place you call your home ⁄
It's time to turn him out turn him loose just walk away ⁄
He's just a mama's boy let him cry girl let him cry ⁄
⁄
That Boy don't love - He's afraid of you ⁄
That Boy don't love - He's afraid of you

If my grandfather could see her now ⁄
He'd lay down and die ⁄

Homesick but it's alright ⁄
Lochloosa is on my mind ⁄

Ho Cake
My Granny makes the best cracklin' ho cake ⁄
It tastes so good I can't wait to dip my plate ⁄
She's cookin' ham hocks in some white-acre peas ⁄
She's cookin' turnip greens and macaroni and cheese ⁄
Get on out my way I got to ease up to that pot ⁄
I like my cornbread while it's still piping hot ⁄
I love this food Lord I can't get enough ⁄
Stick ya hands near my plate, you'll draw back a nub ⁄
⁄
I 'member it happened back in 1978 ⁄
Daddy caught me tryin' to steal a pork chop off his plate ⁄
He snatched it back and I gave him a little sass ⁄
He quick whupped off the belt 'n started whuppin' on my ass ⁄
I learned a lesson 'bout what this food can do ⁄
It can talk yo ass in to turning black-and-blue ⁄
So all you kids keep yo hands to yo on supper ⁄
Cuz if you let that food do the talkin' yo tail might suffer ⁄
⁄
I love smoke mullet, hush puppies and grits ⁄
I love them catfish and I love them popcorn shrimp ⁄
I love fried chicken and I love them collard greens ⁄
I love them black eye peas and them lima beans ⁄
I love that ox-tail soup with a little rice ⁄
I love them candied yams and sweet potato pies ⁄
I love it all Lord I just got to holler ⁄
Tastes so dad-blame good I can't even swallow

Every comfort for you, you , you ⁄
Only gonna do you blind a whole lotta people can't see that high ⁄

This is the house that which we built ⁄

Break a bad habit let it go ⁄
It's harder still you know ⁄

Want a little peace of mind? ⁄
Then grab the lowest branch and start to climb ⁄
⁄
We've been walking on air y'all, we've been walking on air ⁄

The invitation's in ⁄
If it beats all git out then do it again ⁄
Less than pleasant then put it to shame ⁄

Down at the jookhouse baby - Down at the house ⁄
⁄
I done been around the world ⁄
I done seen people everywhere ⁄
But they ain't nobody that can move ⁄
move ya ass like these people down here ⁄
You got the soul we got the slip ⁄
we gonna go barefottin' with the Southern trip ⁄
leave the fools with fools a kickin' that leash ⁄
but throw off that leash and get with the grease ⁄
⁄
We got D over here ⁄
We got Robbie over there ⁄
We got Chris over there ⁄
We got Amy and Turtle and Mike and Jeanie ⁄
What's yo name, I don't know? What's yo name? ⁄
Jim Mao ⁄
My Bad. What's yo name? Jim Mao ⁄
There we go. ⁄
Get up and dance around ⁄
Git into the greasy of the soul funk sound ⁄
we got no time for people who slip ⁄
we go - we got to kick it on down ⁄
kick ya shoes off and jump around ⁄
and act like a fool to the sound ⁄
of the funky little jookhouse groove we got ⁄
and if you don't git it ⁄
hmm...I don't know why.

Free
Some people think they're free ⁄
if they get to do just what they want to do ⁄
and do nothing, nothing else ⁄
⁄
Some people want to lead their life ⁄
others want to follow but it's ok ⁄
cuz every man got to walk his own way ⁄
⁄
Don't be hesitating ⁄
there's no contemplating ⁄
no there is no waiting - you got to live free ⁄
Wealth ain't necessary ⁄
some think it's to scary ⁄
quite the contrary - you got to live free ⁄
⁄
Some people complicate their lives ⁄
others keep it simple ⁄
and that's a little bit closer to the truth ⁄
that we all seek ⁄
⁄
We pledge allegiance to anything ⁄
that takes our mind away ⁄
Freedom ain't cheap, naw freedom ain't easy to get ⁄
⁄
Don't let go ⁄
some let go ⁄
⁄
Don't be hesitating ⁄
there's no contemplating ⁄
no there is no waiting you got to live free ⁄
Wealth ain't necessary ⁄
some think it's to scary ⁄
quite the contrary you got to live free ⁄

All them things you say ⁄
all them things you do ⁄

Florida
I remember my granpa tellin' me ⁄
about the early days of Florida ⁄
Born a swamp cracka' 2 miles from Grannies Bay ⁄
comin' up the way of the wilderness ⁄
⁄
No car phone or electric light ⁄
just livin' life one day at a time ⁄
No newspaper no war and no stife ⁄
just the elemental keys that provide for life ⁄
⁄
Florida I know you're out ther hidin' from me ⁄
you get harder and harder to find ⁄
Everyday she keeps slippin' away ⁄
Florida please don't fade on me now ⁄
⁄
Autumn sun set mornin' skies ablaze ⁄
the oaks and the pines turn their palms up to the sun ⁄
the kind of beauty that hits down in the soul ⁄
and still we're hell bent to destroy it all ⁄
⁄
With concrete and steal we pave ⁄
a road to hell on a land we've killed ⁄
so take a good look and remember it now ⁄
cuz one day ya gonna wake up and find it gone ⁄
⁄
Now skyscrapers and superhighways ⁄
are carved through the heart of Florida ⁄
Building sub-divisions while the swamps are drained ⁄
makin' room for people and amusement parks ⁄
⁄
It's like watchin' someone you love die slow ⁄
Yeah they're killin' her one piece at a time ⁄
I know some fools who think I should let go ⁄
but they never seen Florida through my eyes ⁄
⁄
Florida I know you're out ther hidin' from me ⁄

Santa Claus
Off and to the right, the fade of the light, I'm watching the sun go down ⁄
Over the fields, we see the one, that little girl to make, make my heart pound (yes she do) ⁄
But don't you know that that's forbidden, son you better get rid of them ideas, they'll lead to a hangin' ⁄
⁄
When I was young ⁄
You know that I believed ⁄
In Santa Claus, true love, and freedom ⁄
⁄
Pushin' back the fear, sneakin' off to see her, and we'd dream to leave this land ⁄
Then her family would say, boy ya better stay away, if your daddy finds out you're a dead man ⁄
Leave me to die, my way my time, how can a man Lord chain a man ⁄
⁄
When I was young ⁄
You know that I believed ⁄

Playful days you know I got a lot of memories ⁄
of growing up deep in the South at a time when people cared ⁄
I didn't know I had it good I was to busy playin' games ⁄
livin' childhood dreams and fantasies ⁄
⁄
Slip-n-slide play hide & go seek 'round the swing set ⁄
climbin' trees me and my partner play the man with the golden bar ⁄
Mama callin' out to me tellin me "don't wander off to far" ⁄
"dinners almost ready and ya got to come in soon" ⁄
⁄
Show me the way back to those days ⁄
Show me the way back to those days ⁄
⁄
Truth or dare kissin' icky girls at the playground ⁄
sno-cones for foul balls ⁄
throwin' pennies on the tracks and playin' in the rain ⁄
oblivious of the world around us that was going insane ⁄
Lord feel that vibe Lord feel that vibe ⁄
⁄
Show me the way back to those days ⁄
Show me the way back to those days ⁄
⁄
I was born in the South a long long way from anywhere ⁄
comin' up through troubled times but I did not know to even give a care ⁄
Life was good simple to the point of makin' do ⁄
path ahead of me mysterious indeed all brand new ⁄
and now they fade memories hold my place in time ⁄
While I'm waiting for the changing of the tide ⁄
The thrill is gone and with it went my wings to fly ⁄
Guess we'll have to climb one step at time ⁄
⁄
Yeah we climb one step at a time, yeah we climb ⁄

Do you want to climb the higher road to where we go?

Brighter Days
Don't stop even for the right thing ⁄
does it matter what I say? ⁄
My whole world was by that river ⁄
flowin' north to meet the sea each day ⁄
I don't want to move away ⁄
⁄
You look at me and ya say "what's wrong boy?" ⁄
What else do you want me to say? ⁄
I don't want to leave tomorrow ⁄
been and gone but I belong here now ⁄
Your big world can wait another day ⁄
⁄
Brighter days where did they go? ⁄
⁄
I am hopeful for where I'm goin' ⁄
but I belong in the South ⁄
That was where I's born a po' boy ⁄
livin' life like there's no end in sight ⁄
Even so I've done without ⁄
⁄
Brighter days where did they go? ⁄
⁄
Boy you about to hit the bottom ⁄
I'll be alone I feel I'm movin' where ⁄
To a land you never saw ⁄
