About JJ Grey & MOFRO

Favorites

Records

These are some of the greatest live records ever!

Otis Redding - Good To Me: Live at the Whiskey A-Go-Go 1967 Vol. 2

This record is raw and unfiltered. Probably my favorite live record of all time

Bill Withers - Live at Carnegie Hall

Another absolute must have. "I can't write left handed" will bring tears to your eyes.

Donny Hathaway - Live

Used to be an import but now I think you can get it here. Donny Hathaway was so underrated and this album proves it. Plus his audience on this record has to be the hippest audience ever recorded.

Film

Victor Nunez

Victor Nunez has written and directed some of my favorite films. Ulee's Gold, Gal Youngin', Ruby in Paradise, and A Flash Of Green. All great films and all show a different side of life in Florida.

Errol Morris

One of the best documentarians ever. His documentary on the wrongful conviction of a man in Texas, The Thin Blue Line, was absolutely creepy and had all the makings of a suspense thriller. Vernon, FL is another good one showing just how big characters can get given enough room and isolation. I've heard really good things about The Fog of War but haven't seen it yet.

Stranger with a Camera

A solid documentary about the dangers of filming people without their permission and the fine and sometimes perilous line between social help and social embarrassment.

Clint Eastwood

Just about anything Clint Eastwood directs.

Books

The Creek by J. T. Glisson

One of the best books I've ever read. A collection of stories and reflections of Mr. Glisson's life at Cross Creek in the early to mid 1900's. A wonderful glimpse into the real world of Floridian culture.

A Childhood; The Biography of a Place by Harry Crews

This book brought me home in a whole other way. A pure pleasure to read. Funny, harsh and sad. This childhood story will bring you to tears.

Killing Mr. Watson by Peter Matthiessen

An awesome fiction piece based on the real events surrounding the volatile life of E. J. Watson. Dark, brooding and relentless this novel will put you there so hard you'll swear you lived it.

High-Sheriff Jim Turner: High Times of a Florida Lawman by David T. Warner

A small quick read this book is great. This book documents events in High Sheriff Jim Turner's life including an eyewitness account of the aftermath of the killings at Rosewood, Florida and an admission of murdering a prisoner in his jail.

The Boy Captives by Clinton Smith

This is not a novel. This is the first hand account of the Smith brothers' captivity by Comanches in West Texas in the 1870's. Far from politically correct and untouched by revisionists, this book is not for the squeamish. I found this book in a West Texas truck stop and it was the first book I ever read from cover to cover without stopping. (note: Clinton Smith sells this book directly; info is available here)
